Highway 20 Corridor: Start Here

Highway 20 is the spine of most North Cascades trips, and the plan changes based on what is open, where you stay, and how much time you actually have. Use the guides below to choose a 1-day or 2-day route, lock in last services before the corridor, and pick stops and short hikes that fit your group.

Highway 20 Corridor Guides

Last Gas and Supplies Handle fuel and food before you commit east past Marblemount. Where to Stay Pick the best base town so your drive time stays realistic. Camping vs Cabins Choose a sleep plan for your trip. Seasonal Access Avoid wasted drives by checking closures and seasonal limits first. Best Stops and Highlights Use this for the core stop order and the highest-payoff pullouts. Weekend Itinerary Pick a 1-day or 2-day plan with a clear route shape. Five Easy Hikes Add one short hike without turning the day into a long detour. Family-Friendly Stops Low-stress stops and short walks that work with kids.

Safety and Permits in and around North Cascades National Park

If you are planning a 1 to 2 day SR-20 trip, the main mistake is treating “North Cascades” like one rule set. North Cascades National Park has no entrance fee, but nearby forest trailheads often need a parking pass. Overnight trips use a separate permit system, and access can change independently on SR-20, Cascade River Road, and the high trailhead zone east of Diablo

Dog-Friendly Trails In and Around the North Cascades

If you are bringing a dog on an SR-20 trip, the main problem is not “finding a hike” - it is picking one that stays on the right side of the boundary. This guide filters to dog-legal options along the corridor, plus the two detours people actually do on the same trip (Baker Lake Road and Washington Pass trailheads).

North Cascades Two-Day Itinerary: Best Route, Overnight Base, and Stop Strategy

This page gives you a practical 2-day plan for North Cascades trips on Highway 20, starting west of Marblemount and moving east. It is built to prevent the most common failures: showing up after parking is blown out, discovering SR 20 is closed mid-plan, or wasting time backtracking.

Where to Stay: Cabin Rentals vs Campgrounds vs Hotels

This guide helps with one decision that changes the whole trip: should you camp, book a hotel, or pay more for a cabin or rental? On the west side of North Cascades, those choices do not feel the same. Cabins and rentals are the comfort-and-weather choice. RV parks and campgrounds are the access-and-outdoor-rhythm choice. Hotels and lodges are the easiest plug-in option when you want a bed, a shower, and less setup.

Where to Stay: Best Bases and Tradeoffs

Where you stay near North Cascades changes the whole trip. The four west-side options do not play the same role. This page helps you pick the right base town fast, without overthinking it. Use it if you are planning an overnight trip and want the best tradeoff between driving time, quiet, and access to supplies.

Family-Friendly North Cascades: Short Hikes and Easy Stops

Use it to choose 3 to 5 stops that will actually happen without turning your day into a forced march.

Best Waterfalls Near Highway 20: Short Walks and Viewpoints

The top “doable in any itinerary” picks are Gorge Creek Falls (big waterfall, short walkway) and Ladder Creek Falls in Newhalem (short loop with a real waterfall), with Falls Creek Falls as a strong east-side option near Winthrop if you are already going that direction.
